William Smith, Engine Driver

(circa 1868)

William Smith

1836-1876

He was a son of William Smith and Helen Lillie, born in Glasgow, Scotland and baptized on 11 September 1836. He married Lillias Smith, a daughter of James Smith and Lilias Allan, on 28 March 1856.

When he died in 1876, he left Lillias with six children to raise. His premature death was probably the reason his sons came to the United States.

Lillias Smith

(circa 1900)

At the time of her marriage, she was a powerloom weaver. She was from a weaving family. Her father, James Smith was a handloom weaver at the end of the Industrial Revolution. Her brother, James Allan Smith, was a physician. Another brother, John Allan Smith, was a chemist (pharmacist) in Alexandria. Her mother was Lilias Allan.

In her later years, Lillias Smith came to visit in America, but her trip was cut short for fear that she might die away from home.
